After a year off, the Empire State Winter games were back on for 2022. The games bring together over 2,000 athletes to compete in 30 winter sporting events in Lake Placid and the surrounding Adirondack area.
The opening ceremony was held Thursday, February 3rd, on Mirror Lake in Lake Placid, and was highlighted by a torch relay and lighting on the ice. The relay started in New York City and Buffalo, NY. The torches worked their way all the way up to Lake Placid. Their journey included a dogsled team, a toboggan chute, and figure skaters, the perfect start for the winter games.
There are sporting events all weekend from youth events to adult events and even adaptive events. Adaptive options like bobsled, sled hockey, alpine and cross-country skiing and an adaptive biathlon truly make the games truly for everyone.
Stewart’s hosted a warming area in the Athlete Village, complete with a fire pit, hot chocolate and of course Flavor. Athletes and spectators could stop by, say hi, grab a picture with Flavor, warm up and continue to watch the action on the big screen in the village. The big screen also featured select action from the Beijing Winter Olympics, where many past Empire State Winter Game athletes are competing.
