Vanilla will always be my Stewart’s go-to flavor of choice. When I was a child in the early 60’s my father, a self-employed logger, would deliver his fresh cut pulpwood and/or logs to local mills. My father let his children take turns riding in the truck to the mill each day when school was not in session. Along the route was Stewarts and on the ride home my dad always stopped to purchase boxes of vanilla and chocolate ice creams for the family. Before leaving the shop he always got us each a hand-dipped cone for the bumpy ride home. I always chose vanilla, just like my dad did. He ate his fast so it wouldn’t melt but I remember enjoying mine so slowly that I had to lick it from my hands and arms; none went to waste. Today when I eat Stewart’s Vanilla ice cream, I also smell fresh cut pine, chainsaw gas, and paper mills; and I remember special moments with my father, long since gone.
