Stewart’s Shops is a Times Union Top Workplace for many reasons, one of them being our Make Your Own Scholarship Program benefit.
College is expensive. Stewart’s Shops helps to relieve the burden of college costs through the Make Your Own Scholarship Program. This program has been providing academic scholarships for the dependents of employees and their spouses since 1999.
In 2021, the Make Your Own Scholarship Selection Committee awarded over $410,000 supporting 80 students in the Stewart’s family for the 2021 – 2022 academic year.
Who Can Apply?
The MYO Scholarship Program provides scholarships for active employees’ immediate family members who attend an accredited educational institution. These students will be studying in a variety of fields including Business Administration, Cyber Security, Environmental Science, Political Science and Game Design & Development and many more.
How did it start?
In 1999, Philly Dake established the Make Your Own Scholarship program to help parents with the high cost of a college education. Since its inception, this scholarship program has provided over 1,500 scholarships totaling almost $6 million.
Philly used the Make Your Own phrase to emphasize that students are in control of their education. She understood that although money provides an opportunity, true learning only occurs when students apply themselves to the task and discover that you do indeed Make Your Own Education.
