Stewart's Shops wins the 2008 ‘Highest Quality Milk in New York State' award! This is the second year in a row, and the third time in four years Stewart's has won this award and is honored to say that when you buy your milk, ice cream, and other dairy products from Stewart's Shops, you're purchasing dairy items that are made with Award Winning Milk!
This prestigious distinction, awarded by Cornell University's Department of Food Science, was officially announced at the New York State Fair in Syracuse, NY on August 25th.
The University collected samples from 19 dairy producers across New York State from July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2008. The random samples of whole, 2%, 1% and skim milk were evaluated on criteria ranging from vitamin levels and flavor scores to bacteria counts and antibiotic residue free purity. The testing results determined the ‘Highest Quality' milk honoree.
"Our entire company is honored once again, especially all of our dairy processing employees who work diligently with our local dairy farms to ensure our customers receive only the highest quality milk products possible," said Gary Dake, president of Stewart's Shops Corp.
Stewart's has been processing milk since 1935 when Saratoga Dairy was created. In 1945 an ice cream operation and a shop were purchased from Donald Stewart in Ballston Spa, NY and the first Stewart's Shop was born. Stewart's obtained the right in 1957 from the Department of Agriculture to sell milk from their own Saratoga Dairy to their shops. Today a select group of over 50 dairy farmers from Saratoga, Washington, and Northern Rensselaer Counties provide milk for the 325 Stewart's Shops in Eastern New York and Western Vermont.
Stewart's award winning milk can be found in numerous products that the company carries in its shops. The company, a participant in the ‘Pride of New York' program, offers milk in whole, 1%, 2%, skim, lactose free, chocolate, strawberry and cappuccino varieties. Other dairy by-products include buttermilk, eggnog, half and half, and heavy cream, as well as our cream of broccoli and sundried tomato soups. The over 40 varieties of ice cream available at Stewart's Shops are made daily with the prize winning milk at their plant in Saratoga, NY.

INTERESTING COW FACTS
by "Pasture Eyes"
• I am a Holstein, the most common breed of dairy cow in the United States (Jersey cows produce milk with the highest butterfat content).
• I have an acute sense of smell, and can smell something up to 6 miles away.
• I chew at least 50 times per minute and spend 10 hours a day chewing my cud in order to aid in my digestion. Unlike what you think, I release hydrocarbon mostly by burping (Yes, girls burp too!). Cows release some 100 million tons of hydrocarbon annually. 10 Holsteins produce enough gas to heat a small house for one year!
• My ancestors arrived in America with the Jamestown settlers in 1611.
• There are approximately 340-350 squirts from my udder in a gallon of milk.
• I drink approximately 35 gallons of water a day...the equivalent of a bathtub full of water.
• I have four stomachs and 24 teeth.
-A cow has four stomachs: the rumen, reticulum, omasum and abomasum. The rumen is the largest stomach and acts as a fermentation chamber. The abomasum is last of the four and is comparable in both structure and function to the human stomach.
• I will produce about 350,000 glasses of milk in my lifetime.
• The average lifespan of a Holstein is 7 years. The oldest cow ever recorded was Big Bertha who lived to be 48. She also holds the record for producing 39 calves.
